Proper Left Wrist Position at the Top of the Golf Backswing

One of my continued struggles with my swing is a cupped left wrist at the top of the backswing often coupled with over rotating the forearms. See image. This post however will mainly address the cupped left wrist at the top of the back swing, explain why it is bad and give you some golf drills to correct this issue at the top of the backswing.

I have always had a bit of a cup in my left wrist since I was young mainly because it helps you lengthen your backswing. Cupping the wrist allows you to bend it further. But this perceived benefit is actually a disaster because this leaves the club face way open and if you don't get that wrist flat or bowed by impact your ball is going right and slicing. No two ways about it.

Here are a couple of videos that I found very helpful.

The first video from Hank Haney (Tiger Wood's former teacher) is brief and explains the issue with having a cupped left wrist.

The second video is from Chris Ryan who I feature a lot in my videos. Check out his YouTube channel because he just does a good job of explaining why we need to get into certain positions in golf. In this video Chris goes into detail about the backswing and wrist positions and provides a great drill using a coat hanger that will help get that left wrist flat at the top of the backswing. Here it is:

Finally one of my favorite videos is from Michael Breed of golf channel fame. He is one of the best. This video shows Michael analyzing someone's golf swing who has the classic cupped wrist. The golfer in the video has all the classic compensations for the cupped left wrist which include flipping the hands and early extension. This could be a video of me 3 years ago. This video helped me a bunch to remedy the cupped wrist issue at the top of my backswing. Michael's explanation and drills to improve your golf swing I found super helpful. The only problem is this video can't be shared outside YouTube so I'll just link directly to YouTube - https://youtu.be/trVvDujw_hc?t=83

As always leave comments on your thoughts on the videos or what you found to address the left cupped wrist at the top of the backswing.
